The Municipal Tap Water quality is rapidly deteriorating and is now a risk to your health

Earlier this year an article appeared in the Herald, investigating the murky water that was coming out of the taps in parts of Nelson Mandela Bay. The residents are frustrated with the quality of water that is coming out of their taps. Not happy with "tap water that looks like toilet water or where crocodiles would live" - The Herald followed up on behalf of the residents with the local water authorities. The findings were shocking:

The water in Nelson Mandela Bay is contaminated by bacteria after traces of E. coli — fecal matter from either animals or humans — were discovered in testing samples.

A letter addressing the problem was sent to the municipal water department but received no response. The matter was escalated by the concerned parties and the letter was sent to the mayor. Apparently, samples were taken and the test results must have been found to be within the acceptable margins for drinking water as a statement was released stating that the water is safe to drink.

While it has ultimately been acknowledged that drought and the high water demand in the Bay is the main cause for the murky water. It was affirmed that the municipality produces "water that is safe to drink in terms of SANS 241.

Fast forward a month to 21 Feb 2022 and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality releases an urgent press release that the water tested has exceeded the microbiological safe limits and is likely to be harmful to humans if consumed. There seems that the Municipality has uncovered some failures in their ability to comply with the SANS standards.

The solution from the Municipality is to boil your water before drinking or cooking until further notice. The urgent notice ends by stressing the seriousness of this warning and ends by apologising for any inconvenience caused in the meantime.
