URGENT WATER ALERT
The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro has introduced water drawn from boreholes to supplement the dwindling dam water supply. This means that the standard of water has been compromised and the municipality cannot guarantee that the water is fit for consumption.
For your safety the municipality has urged that all tap water is boiled thoroughly before consumption.
This is not the first time that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has issued an urgent alert regarding the deterioration of the quality of our drinking water.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR TAP WATER SAFE FOR DRINKING
What can we do to safeguard ourselves and our families against harmful bacteria that can cause stomach aches, diarrhea etc.? We clearly can’t rely on the municipality to ensure our water is safe.
Short Term Solution
Boiling your water.
The standard recommendation for boiling water is a FULL ROLLING BOIL for ONE MINUTE and COOL BEFORE USE. The term rolling boil ensures that an effective pasteurization temperature is reached to kill or inactivate waterborne pathogens.
Long Term solution
The installation of a filtration system that can remove viruses and bacteria is highly recommended. This will ensure that the water you use with will be safe for drinking, cooking, washing, brushing of teeth etc.
Not all filters remove bacteria and viruses. Here is a short explanation:
Sedimentation filters:
Used to remove organic material and other solids from the water. They are rated in microns. 20micron is a 20th of a millimeter, so any solids larger than 20 microns will be filtered out by the filter. You get different micron sizes, 100, 50, 20,10,5,2 and 0.2. The smaller the number the finer and better the filtration.
Water filters need to be replaced at least every 6 months, or sooner depending on the quality of the water.
They DO NOT REMOVE pathogens as viruses and bacteria, as these are too small to be stopped by these filters.
Carbon filter, Activated Carbon(AC), Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC)
Activated carbon is used to purify water through the process of adsorption. Contaminants and colourants within the water adhere to the porous surface of the activated carbon, allowing them to be filtered from the water. The porous surface is created by applying high heat to carbon-rich organic materials like wood, coal, petroleum pitch, willow peat, and more.
* Removes chlorine

They also, DO NOT REMOVE any pathogens.

Reverse Osmoses Filters
Reverse Osmosis is a technology that is used to remove a large majority of contaminants from water by pushing the water under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane. Only water molecules pass through the filters, making it effective in removing viruses and bacteria.
RO systems require high water pressure so will use lots of electricity.
It also wastes about 3-4l of water for every 10l of water.
Ultraviolet Light
DNA & RNA is the genetic material that makes up all living organisms, controlling their growth, development, functioning and reproduction. UV light produces electromagnetic energy that can destroy the ability of microorganisms to reproduce and cause inactivation of microbes by causing mutations and/or cell death.
UV does not add or remove anything from the water. It does require some electricity to function.
The UV Bulb needs to be changed every 9000hrs (just over 1 year).
